Wings for Life auction raises 39,000 pounds

4 December 2012

The racing suits of six Formula 1 World Champions went under the hammer at a special charity auction in London on Monday evening. Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Räikkönen, Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel all donated overalls to the cause, raising 39,000 pounds for the Wings for Life.

"I’m really proud to have won the championship with the team and it's great that these suits have raised so much money for such a fantastic charity," explained Wings for Life ambassador Vettel, whose Red Bull suit was snapped up for 11,000 pounds.

The sales of the remaining overalls ranged between 2,000 and 7,500 pounds, with the six title winners also donating signed racing gloves and photographic prints.

Wings for Life was partly established by Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz back in 2004, funding research projects focused on finding a cure to paraplegia.
