Sergio Pérez believes Sauber will be able to challenge for race victories this season, with the Mexican expecting his former team's upward trend to continue. The 22-year-old, who has completed his move to McLaren after two promising years with the Hinwil-based outfit, picked up three podium finishes in 2012.
"Sauber will be strong again, I am convinced of that," Pérez is quoted as saying by Austrian newspaper Speed Week. "The rules are fairly stable and they have understood their car well, so why should they be worse than they were in 2012? I even think there will be a few races that they will be capable of winning."
Although he is now part of a race-winning team, Pérez has not forgotten his Sauber roots and would be pleased to see the team achieve more in 2013.
"Sauber has done a lot for me," he added. "I would be happy for the team if it all goes well, more so than any other team – of course with the exception of McLaren!"
Pérez, who has replaced the Mercedes-bound Lewis Hamilton on a 'multi-year' deal, will share the McLaren garage with 2009 World Champion Jenson Button this year.
