Kovalainen: I'm still in talks with Caterham

17 January 2013

Heikki Kovalainen says he is still in talks with Caterham over a race seat for the 2013 season, insisting that Formula 1 remains his only target. Speaking to television channel MTV3, the Finn explained that Charles Pic's team-mate is yet to be decided.

"At the moment, I'm not in negotiations outside of Formula 1," Kovalainen explained of his current situation. "I have not thought about anything else at this stage. First, let the cards play out. Then, once you know what the result is, we'll see what to do."

Kovalainen also responded to the recent comments by Chief Technical Officer Mike Gascoyne, with the latter claiming that the former Renault and McLaren driver and his management 'showed a lack of respect' with regards to his position at Caterham.

"I've always got along well with Mike," said Kovalainen. "I have no problem with him after this. The fact is, I did not negotiate with Mike. I spoke to (Group Chairman) Tony Fernandes and (Team Principal) Cyril Abiteboul. Mike has not said anything to me and I have no problem with that. It has not had an effect on my contract negotiations."

Kovalainen is up against Vitaly Petrov and Giedo van der Garde for the seat alongside Pic. Bruno Senna has also held talks with the team after being dropped by Williams.
