Valsecchi gets third driver role at Lotus

28 January 2013

Reigning GP2 Champion Davide Valsecchi has been announced as Lotus's Third Driver for the 2013 season. The Italian, whose position was confirmed at the launch of the team's E21 chassis on Monday, joins Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean, plus ongoing reserve Jérôme d'Ambrosio and development driver Nicolas Prost.

"I’m really happy that the team want me to be with them and I’m excited about the future," said Valsecchi. "I hope that this is a really good start to a career in Formula 1."

Having claimed the 2012 GP2 title with four victories and two pole positions to his name, Valsecchi drove for Lotus at the Abu Dhabi Young Driver test last November.

In 2012, d'Ambrosio made a one-off appearance as Lotus's reserve, being called up to substitute for Romain Grosjean - who was serving a ban - at the Italian Grand Prix.
