New Ferrari development driver Pedro de la Rosa says he did not expect to be given his upcoming test outing at Jerez, with the Spaniard set to get behind the wheel of the team's latest design on the final day of the first pre-season gathering of 2013.
After Felipe Massa kicks off the outfit's programme, de la Rosa will take over with the aim of increasing the correlation between the Ferrari simulator in Maranello and the real life performance of the car.
"I’ve seen the new car in the factory, as it is being prepared for the first test," he said. "I am very happy to be able to test it and honestly I had not expected that. It’s a unique opportunity to begin to understand how the car works and how I can help with work in the simulator."
De la Rosa was officially announced in his Ferrari role at the Madonna di Campiglio press event earlier this month, having been left on the sidelines after HRT's demise.
Fernando Alonso will drive Ferrari's new car for the first time in Barcelona on 19 February, with the Spaniard missing the Jerez test to focus on his training regime.
