New Ferrari design to be called the F138

New Ferrari design to be called the F138

30 January 2013

Ferrari's latest design will be entitled the F138, the Italian outfit explained on Wednesday. The name of the car, which is due to be launched at the team's Maranello factory on Friday, marks both the year 2013 and the end to the V8 engine era.

This season, Formula 1 teams will use V8 powerplants for the final time, before the introduction of 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 units in 2014. The decision, part of governing body the FIA's green initiative, brings the curtain down on an eight-year V8 spell.

Felipe Massa kicks off Ferrari's testing programme at Jerez next week, completing three days behind the wheel of the F138 before handing over to Pedro de la Rosa. Fernando Alonso will be in action from the second pre-season test in Barcelona.
