Vergne hails 'better direction' at Toro Rosso

4 February 2013

Jean-Éric Vergne believes Toro Rosso is heading in 'a better direction' with its overall approach to Grand Prix racing, describing a more efficient work ethic at the outfit. With James Key taking over as the team's Technical Director at the midway point of the 2012 season, hopes are high over the potential of the new STR8 chassis.

Vergne, who is preparing to embark upon his second Formula 1 campaign with the Faenza-based squad, is confident that the recent technical changes added to his baseline experience of the sport will pave the way for much stronger results in 2013.

"Going into this season is a completely different experience to this time last year, when I had to deal with a lot of unknowns," said Vergne. "I had to learn the majority of tracks, understand so many details about Formula 1 and adapt to working with the team.

"This year, I will still be learning, but the basics are there and I will be able to focus on more important aspects of the job. I sense a new philosophy within Toro Rosso: I wouldn't say people are working harder, but maybe they are going in a better direction."

Vergne will compete with the number 18 throughout the 2013 season, having outscored ongoing team-mate Daniel Ricciardo by a total of six points in 2012. The Frenchman will get behind the wheel of the STR8 for the first time on Thursday.
