Toto Wolff, Mercedes' motorsport boss, says a top four Constructors' position would be a positive outcome for the outfit in 2013. The Austrian's target follows on from compatriot and three-time World Champion Niki Lauda's comments that the Silver Arrows will be able to take the fight to the sport's top teams this season.
The German marque, which has not finished higher than fourth in the Constructors' standings since returning to the sport as a works team in 2010, has recently undergone a structural reshuffle in a renewed bid to climb up the Formula 1 order. Although 2013 will not be a defining year for the squad, Wolff is still hoping to challenge the front-runners on a regular basis.
"If the team finishes in the top four and is a regular front-runner," Wolff told the official Formula 1 website when asked what he would label a good campaign. "I will do everything it needs to make this team successful. First it is watch and listen, and then I will give my opinion and execute my opinion."
Wolff went on to explain that his move from Williams does not come without personal risk, with the Austrian admitting that his ‘neck is on the line’ at the Silver Arrows.
"As they know I have put my neck on the line they know that I have no room for failure," Wolff added. "Not only have I taken a personal risk by leaving Williams - where I have enjoyed working - but there is also a financial and economic side to it. There is a huge amount of trust on both sides and I am very happy having joined."
