Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes is 'making continual steps forward' with its new F1 W04 chassis, substantially aided by the Briton's mileage haul at the Circuit de Catalunya on Wednesday. The 2008 World Champion completed 121 laps during his first of two stints in the cockpit this week, finishing 0.878 seconds off the pace.

"We had a good day today and it was nice to get so many laps in," Hamilton explained to the gathered media. "We're making continual steps forward in terms of our understanding of the set-up and tyres.

"The Hard compound work in particular was pretty good today, although all of tyres are showing degradation so looking after them isn't easy. The guys are working really hard, and it's encouraging to see the amount of work that's being put in. We're focusing on our own programme and just getting on with it."

Hamilton will hand the F1 W04 back to team-mate Nico Rosberg tomorrow morning, before returning to action and bringing the test to a close for Mercedes on Friday.
