Hamilton 'prayed' for Sutil's F1 comeback

1 March 2013

Lewis Hamilton says he prayed for Adrian Sutil during the latter's bid to secure a Formula 1 return. The pair had been close friends following a spell as team-mates in the Formula 3 Euro Series, but their relationship was put to the test in 2011 when Sutil went under trial for attacking Genii Capital's Eric Lux in a Shanghai nightclub.

Sutil, who was charged with grievous bodily harm and handed an 18-month suspended sentence, labelled Hamilton 'a coward' for not standing as a witness after his view of the incident. However, although their friendship is not as strong as it used to be, Hamilton says he is looking forward to being reunited with the 30-year-old.

"I emailed him as soon as I found out and congratulated him," Hamilton explained. "I had said a prayer for him, that I really hoped he got the seat because he deserved it. I haven't heard back from him, but I am sure at some stage we will get to talk."

When asked about the state of their friendship by Sky Sports, Sutil revealed that he had not spoken to Hamilton since being replaced at the end of the 2011 season.

"I'm not in contact with him anymore, so we have no relationship at the moment," the Force India driver said of the current situation. "I've not seen him and I've not spoken to him. For sure, I will meet up with him, but I don't know what will happen."
