Fernando Alonso feels more confident about his chances in the upcoming Formula 1 campaign than at this point last year, explaining that Ferrari faces a much smaller deficit to the front of the field as the final pre-season test draws to a close.
On a rain-hit second day at the Circuit de Catalunya, Alonso admitted that it was a challenge to gather meaningful data, but from what he and the Italian outfit have seen so far the correlation between the wind tunnel and on-track performance is positive.
"It's very difficult to compare things to the test last week, or when we were here a year ago," Alonso told the gathered media, including GPUpdate.net. "Nevertheless, I am now more confident than last year. Before the season even started, we knew that we were two seconds behind. It's different this year.
"Our goal for this year is to close the gap to the teams and we have high hopes that we will succeed. This year, the results from the wind tunnel are consistent with what we see on the track. Every time we put new updates on the car, they work as we expect them to."
Alonso, whose Friday lap total surpassed the milestone 100 as he focused on long runs in the F138, will be back behind the wheel for the final day of pre-season testing.
