Van der Garde: No internal rivalry at Caterham

12 March 2013

Giedo van der Garde says there will be no intense rivalry with Caterham team-mate Charles Pic throughout the 2013 Formula 1 season. The Dutchman, who makes his debut in Melbourne this weekend, realises that the pair will need to work productively to push the team towards the midfield and ultimately the points-scoring positions.

"In my opinion, there is not really a competition going on," said van der Garde. "We are both young drivers. Charles has one year of experience in F1, which I can benefit from. Eventually we will fight each other on-track, which makes sense. However, it is in everyone's interests that we are committed to pushing the team forward. We have to do it together."

Although van der Garde’s target is to outpace Pic in the long term, he believes their phase as GP2 team-mates will make for a positive atmosphere.

"I am happy with him as my team-mate," the 27-year-old went on to explain. "Charles is a talented and professional guy who works hard and wants to move forward. I’ve known him since 2011, when we were both racing in GP2 with Addax.

"Charles was one of the first people who congratulated me on my Caterham contract. He sent me a text message saying ‘Addax Team in Formula 1’. That was nice of him."
