Lewis Hamilton says he was pleased to deliver a lap time when it mattered during this afternoon's qualifying session for the Australian Grand Prix, having been disappointed with the start to his maiden weekend as a Mercedes driver.
After safely making it through to the Q3 phase, Hamilton delivered a personal best time of 1:28.087 to claim third on the grid for Sunday afternoon's race. He will line-up just behind Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, with team-mate Rosberg back in sixth.
"I’m really, really happy," Hamilton told reporters after qualifying. "The conditions were very tricky, but I’m happy that I finally got a lap as I’ve not had the best of weekends. I’m just grateful for all the hard work from the team. I’m happy with the step we’ve done and I think we’ve got a good baseline to work on."
Despite his positivity, Hamilton is slightly concerned about the fact that he completed more laps on his set of Super Soft tyres than those around him in Q3.
"It’s going to be massively challenging with tyres," he added. "I’m not sure how long they will last, as they are already graining. I did one or two more laps than the other guys, so I will struggle to go as long as them in first stint. I will give everything I have."
