Button 'disappointed' by tyre change
19 April 2013 – Jenson Button says he is slightly disappointed by Pirelli's decision to modify its tyre compound allocation for the Bahrain Grand Prix, with the Italian manufacturer swapping its short-lasting Soft rubber in favour of the more durable Medium.
Button reckons the choice, which is said to have been made after Malaysia and not in direct response to the high degradation levels witnessed at Shanghai, will reduce the possibilities McLaren has in terms of putting together a unique race strategy.
"It is a bit disappointing - the Soft would have been nice," Button told Sky Sports. "Where we are at the minute, we try to do different things with the strategy and that is what is getting us points at the minute - perhaps more points than the car deserves. We will make the best of it, it is so hot here, so it is still not going to be easy on the tyres and that is good for us."
At the Chinese Grand Prix, Button finished fifth by starting the race on the harder, Medium compound rubber before switching to the Soft tyre in the closing stages.
