Fry: Alonso was fast enough to win
22 April 2013 – Ferrari Technical Director Pat Fry believes that Fernando Alonso would have been able to fight for victory in Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix if it was not for his DRS failure, with the Spaniard being forced to pit twice after the device stuck open.
Having overcome pole-sitter Nico Rosberg in the early stages of the race, Alonso had settled into second behind ultimate winner Sebastian Vettel when his problem arose, leaving Fry to ponder what could have happened under normal circumstances.
"This was a very complicated Sunday for both drivers," Fry explained after the race. "On Lap 6, a problem occurred with the DRS on Fernando’s car which forced us to bring forward his first stop to try and fix the rear wing which literally turned upside down.
"The first attempt from the mechanics was not enough to fix the problem and a second stop to try and fix it further cost valuable time. It’s a real shame because even with a damaged car, his race pace was among the best and it should have been enough to see us finish second or even fight for the win."
In the second Ferrari, Felipe Massa finished 15th after enduring a first lap clash with Force India driver Adrian Sutil and a pair of suspected tyre delaminations.
