Vettel moves ahead in second practice
10 May 2013 – Sebastian Vettel moved ahead of the competition during a clear second free practice session in Barcelona on Friday afternoon. The Red Bull driver posted a personal best effort of 1:22.808 to lead morning pace-setter and Ferrari rival Fernando Alonso by 17 thousandths of a second, while Mark Webber finished in third.
With this morning’s poor weather conditions making way for a dry spell, the drivers quickly headed out to learn more about their respective upgrade packages. A mixture of stints on the prototype and standard Hard compound tyre preceded the faster Medium tyre runs, with Vettel coming out on top during a rare traffic-free tour.
Alonso, who finished comfortably fastest in the first 90 minute practice session, was on target to retain his position this afternoon but lost time behind Esteban Gutiérrez’s Sauber on the run up to Campsa. The Spaniard slotted in just ahead of Mark Webber, with Kimi Räikkönen claiming fourth. Felipe Massa finished fifth quickest in the sister Ferrari, enjoying a much smoother session after his morning adventures.
Lewis Hamilton was next up in sixth position, enduring a slow spin at Turn 12 on one of his early Hard tyre runs. The Briton ended the session just ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, who topped the timing screens early on. Force India’s Adrian Sutil wound up half a second behind his fellow German in eighth, with Jean-Éric Vergne slipping back to ninth place after his top three showing earlier today.
Paul di Resta completed the top ten in the second Force India, but the Scot’s session came to a dramatic end when his left-rear tyre gave way along the pit-straight. A little further back, the heavily-revised McLarens of Jenson Button and Sergio Pérez wound up 12th and 13th respectively after a relatively low key afternoon for the team.
At the rear-end of the field, Caterham's Giedo van der Garde put his team ahead of Marussia, holding an advantage of one tenth over Ferrari protege Jules Bianchi. Almost a second further back, Charles Pic edged ahead of Britain's Max Chilton.
