Race pace remains priority for Mercedes
10 May 2013 – Managing tyre degradation with Pirelli's Medium and Hard compound allocation remains the focus for Mercedes after Nico Rosberg admitted to experiencing "a lot of graining" throughout Friday's pair of practice sessions at the Circuit de Catalunya.
With one-lap pace not a concern for the German and team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who finished the second session comfortably inside the top ten during their Medium tyre runs, the squad will spend this evening attempting to alleviate wear rates.
"It seems that we are quick again on one lap but we need to focus very much on achieving a good race pace," seventh-placed Rosberg told reporters in the paddock. "There is still a lot work to do but in general I felt that we had a good test programme today and learned quite a lot. It's difficult to manage the tyres in these conditions and we have seen a lot of graining today because of the lower temperatures."
Hamilton, who edged out Rosberg in sixth position, added of the situation: "After the first session this morning, I felt there was some good promise and the car was well-balanced but I was a little less happy in the different conditions this afternoon. We'll keep working on it tonight and see if we can make tomorrow a little better."
Mercedes sits fourth in the Constructors' standings on a total of 64 points ahead of Sunday's Grand Prix, 45 behind reigning Champions and current leaders Red Bull.
