Horner: Pirelli tyres to decide 2013 titles
11 May 2013 – According to Red Bull team boss Christian Horner, the biggest obstacle in this year's championship fight comes in the shape of Pirelli's modified tyre compounds. With degradation levels greater and pit-stop numbers therefore increased, the Briton says understanding the rubber stands out as the most important factor at present.
"Whoever masters and understands these tyres best and most consistently will emerge at the end of the year," Horner told the official Formula 1 site in an interview.
Red Bull is currently leading both championship standings, but is seeing more rivalry than last year. Lotus driver Kimi Räikkönen is ten points behind Sebastian Vettel in the Drivers' battle, while in the Constructors' standings Lotus sits 16 points behind.
As the season progresses, Horner is not expecting the challenge from rivals teams and drivers to dwindle: "We know that there is very strong competition between Alonso, Räikkönen, and the Mercedes drivers, so we are not only looking inwardly at our own two drivers - the main competition is outside the team…"
Vettel was fastest driver on the opening day of practice at the Circuit de Catalunya.
