Rosberg remains cautious ahead of race
11 May 2013 – Spanish Grand Prix pole-sitter Nico Rosberg says he is approaching race day in a prudent frame of mind after a challenging experience in Bahrain, the Mercedes driver admitting that tyre degradation is still a concern for the Brackley-based team.
Rosberg, who heads the front row at the Circuit de Catalunya alongside team-mate Lewis Hamilton, hailed a faultless qualifying performance from the outfit, but insists that the result must be "enjoyed with caution" after its recent race showings.
"We've just worked really well all weekend and optimised everything," said Rosberg. "I'm a bit surprised to be that quick today. It all went perfectly and we put in a really quick lap at the end; I'm really happy with it. It's also fantastic to have a front row, but we have to be cautious after Bahrain. [The result] is to be enjoyed with caution!"
Going into more detail about the work Mercedes has been completing back at its factory to solve the degradation issues, Rosberg explained: "Everybody has been working really hard to understand our problems even better. Understanding how to get the most out of the tyres is very complex. Here [at Barcelona] it’s more the graining of the tyre that’s the main issue, so we’re trying to catch up and make the most of it.
"I think we’ve improved things. This morning was a little better, so I'm a little more confident for tomorrow. But the race is different, so it will be a real challenge."
