Alonso: Mercedes favourites for Monaco
13 May 2013 – Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso believes that rivals Mercedes head into next weekend's Monaco Grand Prix as the favourites for victory, despite enjoying a comfortable triumph in front of his home crowd at the Circuit de Catalunya on Sunday.
With the Silver Arrows claiming pole position at the last three events and the streets of Monte-Carlo offering few opportunities to overtake under normal racing conditions, the Spaniard sees Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton as his biggest threats.
"They will arrive as favourites," said Alonso. "They've been on pole the last three races. It's more difficult to overtake in Monaco, so maybe they can keep good positions for longer."
On his own race chances, Alonso added: "I'm confident for Monte-Carlo. Looking at the last three years, even when we were not competitive there, we always managed to be on the podium, more or less. So that's the aim for this year as well.
"I remember in 2011 we were lapped here [in the Spanish Grand Prix] by the McLarens and Red Bull. Then we arrived in Monaco and we nearly won the race. We were fighting for victory so I don't see any reason, with this car which is also competitive everywhere, not to fight for top positions in Monaco."
Alonso currently sits third in the championship standings on 72 points, 13 behind second-place man Kimi Räikkönen and a further four adrift of leader Sebastian Vettel.
