Wolff confirms engine talks with Williams
25 May 2013 – Toto Wolff has confirmed that Mercedes is currently in talks with Williams over a future engine agreement, with the German marque eager to supply three outfits when McLaren switches to Honda powerplants from the 2015 campaign onwards.
At present, Mercedes supplies McLaren and Force India with its engines, but Wolff, who formerly acted as an Executive Director at Williams, says it is important for the brand to offer units to more teams under the new turbocharged V6 regulations.
"It is clear we are losing an engine customer in 2015 and for Mercedes it is important to have a regular business case," Wolff explained in Monaco on Saturday evening. "So it is important to have three customers from 2015 onwards and that is why we are having certain discussions with a number of teams, where Williams is one of them.
When asked if a potential deal with Williams would be for the 2015 season, Wolff responded: "No, it would be for 2014. You can't sign a one-year deal with anyone."
Williams is one of four teams currently supplied by French manufacturer Renault.
