Force India: Mercedes test a big advantage
7 June 2013 – Force India Chief Operating Officer Otmar Szafnauer believes that Mercedes will have gained "a big advantage" from its recent test on prototype Pirelli tyre compounds, with debate over the private outing still rife as the Canadian Grand Prix weekend begins.
Although Pirelli insists that rival outfits were given the opportunity to test at the Circuit de Catalunya directly after the Spanish Grand Prix, Red Bull and Ferrari led a protest in Monaco, with 1000km of running being completed on prototype 2014 compounds.
Ahead of the International Tribunal, called for by governing body the FIA, Szafnauer says the Brackley-based team is certain to have enjoyed significant benefits.
"It's a big advantage," Szafnauer explained to Sky Sports. "It’s nothing to do with us, but if we were to have three days on-track it would be advantageous to us."
If Mercedes is deemed to be guilty when the panel meets later in the season, the outfit faces a maximum penalty of exclusion from the World Championship.
