I just put a wheel off-line, says Maldonado
8 June 2013 – Williams driver Pastor Maldonado says his accident in the closing stages of the opening free practice session at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on Friday morning was simply caused by putting a wheel off-line on cold tyres, as opposed to a car failure.
The Venezuelan, who made significant contact with the concrete wall on the exit of Turn 4, ended the day 14th fastest, two places ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
"The conditions were tough," said Maldonado. "There was a dry line towards the end of FP1 but on cold tyres I put a wheel off-line and I crashed. This afternoon was better as we completed our full programme, however, we still need to work to get a better feeling in the car and we need to focus on getting the tyres working quicker."
The former GP2 Champion added: "Despite the changeable conditions we managed to get a lot of data today which we can assess ahead of tomorrow’s qualifying."
Williams has failed to register a point over the course of the opening six races, with the team last achieving a top ten finish at the 2012 United States Grand Prix.
