Alonso relieved with return to podium
9 June 2013 – Fernando Alonso expressed a feeling of relief after finishing second in Sunday afternoon’s Canadian Grand Prix, with the Ferrari driver bouncing back from a below-par seventh-place finish on the streets of Monte-Carlo last time out.
Although the Spaniard could only claim sixth on the grid during a rain-hit qualifying session 24 hours ago, he fought through the field with a succession of brave overtakes, most notably on Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton at the first corner.
"Yesterday we didn’t have a good qualifying session," Alonso reflected after the 70-lap race. "I didn’t put a lap together, but I knew that our pace was good in the dry.
"We fought with the top drivers today. I had very good fights with Mark, Nico [Rosberg] and Lewis. It is not easy even if you have a little bit more pace, as these are super talented drivers. With second, we score good points after a very difficult weekend."
Alonso moves up to second in the championship standings following his podium result, but he trails current leader Vettel by 36 points ahead of the British Grand Prix.
