Horner: Vettel agreement perfect timing
16 June 2013 – Red Bull team boss Christian Horner believes that Sebastian Vettel's newly-signed contract extension came at the 'perfect time' for both parties, with the reigning World Champion now tied to the outfit until at least the end of 2015.
Although Vettel had a previous agreement running through 2014, it was announced on Tuesday that the German would be remaining onboard for at least one more season, with Horner describing the deal as "a formality" following their recent success.
"It was more of a formality than anything else," commented Horner, who has overseen Vettel's run of three consecutive world titles. "We have a long-term agreement with Sebastian, and it was just perfect timing for both sides to extend for another year.
"The fact he has signed this extension shows his commitment to Red Bull, and hopefully the relationship will go beyond 2015, which is already some way into the future."
Horner went on to argue that Vettel, who dominated last weekend's Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, is "still growing and developing" as a driver.
"He's been part of the Red Bull family, since starting out as a junior, for more than 12 years now, so he's grown up with Red Bull," Horner explained. "He's achieved all 29 victories in cars designed by [Chief Technical Officer] Adrian [Newey], and he is still growing and developing as a driver. He enjoys the environment he is working in, we enjoy having him and working with him. It's a relationship that works."
Vettel currently holds a 36-point lead over Fernando Alonso in the Drivers' standings.
