McNish: Di Resta knocking on podium door
29 June 2013 – Ex-Formula 1 driver and three-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Allan McNish predicts that fellow Scot Paul di Resta will be "knocking on the door" of a podium finish at this weekend's British Grand Prix, the latter having featured highly in Friday practice.
Di Resta, who has scored points in six of this season's seven races, is yet to achieve a rostrum result during his Formula 1 career, but McNish reckons Force India's initial long-run pace at Silverstone could provide him with a strong opportunity to do so.
"I would predict di Resta to be knocking on the door of say fourth or maybe a podium," McNish explained to GPUpdate.net. "The Force Indias were very good on the long runs [on Friday]."
However, McNish says qualifying holds the key to success for di Resta, who has been eliminated from the opening Q1 phase at the past two Grands Prix in Canada and Monaco.
"The key is qualifying," added McNish. "He has been very good, the team has been very good and the car has been very good at trying to recover those situations and doing very long stints. If they can start up the front of the grid then that helps massively.
"If you look back to the Bahrain Grand Prix [fourth place finish] and also look towards what happened in Barcelona [seventh place finish], it does come down to qualifying."
