Boullier: We have 'Plan B' if Räikkönen leaves
12 July 2013 – Lotus team principal Eric Boullier has revealed the Enstone-based outfit does have contingency plans in place should number one driver Kimi Räikkönen opt to join Red Bull Racing in 2014.
Earlier this week, Boullier revealed that he expects the Finn to make a decision by August and while he would ‘prefer continuity’ on the driver front, he added that he is weighing up other options too.
“I always have a plan B, and we are in a favourable position in that after some big names we are the most desired team. A lot of drivers are talking to us, so should the white sheet situation occur [and we need new drivers] I have a plan B but I will not share that now!” he told the official F1 site.
Meanwhile, despite seeing ‘his’ team drop back to fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship, 23 points behind Ferrari and 26 points behind Mercedes, Boullier believes Lotus can still finish third and take the ‘bronze medal’.
“We could live with that [fourth place in Constructors’], but that is not the plan. We are pretty confident that we will be able to fight back. P3 in the constructors’ should be manageable,” he stated.
