Symonds to join Williams as technical chief
16 July 2013 – Pat Symonds will join Williams as its Chief Technical Officer next month. The former Renault chief, whose departure from Marussia was announced earlier on Tuesday, will step into the shoes of Technical Director Mike Coughlan, who is to leave the team.
Following the crashgate scandal of 2008, Symonds made a tentative return to the sport by aiding the Marussia as a consultant. Having held the post since 2011, he has departed to take up his new role with Williams, which becomes active on August 19.
"Williams is a team steeped in success and engineering excellence and I’m honoured to be asked to play a role in returning the team to its rightful place at the pinnacle of Formula 1," said Symonds. "Sir Frank, Mike and Claire have put in place the foundations for success and I’m immensely excited to begin this new challenge."
Sir Frank Williams added: "His technical capabilities and sporting successes speak for themselves and I’m sure that his knowledge and leadership will contribute considerably to the success that all of us at Williams are working hard to achieve."
Williams also thanked Coughlan for his "significant contribution" to the outfit.
