17 July 2013 – McLaren youngster Kevin Magnussen says he "feels ready" to make the step up to Formula 1 after his latest test appearance for the team at Silverstone on Wednesday.
The Dane, who is competing in Formula Renault 3.5, topped the timesheets at the Northamptonshire venue, completing 100 valuable laps in the process. His best effort of 1:33.602, set on Medium tyres, put him just ahead of Force India's Paul di Resta.
"We have to see where we are, I feel ready for Formula 1," Magnussen explained to reporters in the Silverstone paddock. "I have a championship to do in World Series by Renault so I'm really focusing on that and when I'm finished in I'll see where I am."
The 20-year-old added: "I'm confident that we're going in the right direction but you have to evaluate everything. You have to have a plan but you have to evaluate yourself all the time so we'll see by the end of the year what chances I have and how we feel."
Magnussen reckons he is also making gains on the technical front, describing a general improvement in personal performance since his Abu Dhabi outing in 2012.
"I'm working with the team also when I'm not testing," Magnussen went on to explain. "So I'm learning more about Formula 1 and being educated about it all the time.
"I learn more and more about the technical side of Formula 1 and that's very important when you're testing. You have to have knowledge about the car and that's improving all the time. So of course I feel better this time than the last time I tested, that's natural."
Oliver Turvey will drive the MP4-28 on Thursday, before Gary Paffett concludes the test.
