New tyres of 'primary focus' for Maldonado
23 July 2013 – Williams driver Pastor Maldonado says getting on top of Pirelli's overhauled tyres, featuring the construction raced throughout the 2012 campaign mixed with 2013 compounds, will be of primary focus when the Hungarian Grand Prix gets underway.
During the recent Young Driver Test at Silverstone, attending race drivers were able to complete their first miles on the new rubber, which has been introduced by the Italian manufacturer in response to the tyre blow-outs suffered during the British Grand Prix.
But although the Venezuelan gained a general understanding from his time behind the wheel, he does not expect definitive answers until Friday practice in Hungary.
"There will be new tyres from Pirelli this weekend that combine last year’s construction with this year’s compounds, so understanding how these perform will be a primary focus for the teams as we prepare for this race," 28-year-old Maldonado commented.
"Testing these tyres at Silverstone has given me an insight into the changes made, but it will only be after practice on Friday that can we sit down and analyse all the data and discuss our strategy for the weekend."
Williams has failed to record a point from the opening nine races, leaving the outfit just ahead of Marussia and Caterham at the bottom of the Constructors' standings.
