Petrov eyes return with Mercedes backing
5 August 2013 – Vitaly Petrov is eyeing a Formula 1 return next season, with the backing of Mercedes. The 28-year-old Russian lost his Caterham seat at the end of last year and is currently on the sidelines after being unable to secure a drive with another team.
Petrov was a guest of Mercedes for the latest DTM round at the Moscow Raceway last weekend, driving guests around the circuit in a DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé after brand ambassador Michael Schumacher cancelled his involvement in the event. Although no firm talks have taken place between the two parties, he is hopeful of making a comeback with support from the German manufacturer in 2014.
The factory Mercedes team and McLaren are out of the equation for Petrov, with their line-ups in a stable position, but Williams and Force India will also be supplied by the marque next year, when V8 engines are replaced by turbocharged V6 powerplants.
"It would be great if Mercedes would support me," Petrov explained to Russian news agency RIA Novosti at last weekend's DTM round. "I'm open to discussions."
The inaugural Russian Grand Prix is scheduled to take place in Sochi next season.
