Schumacher: Mercedes form due to good base
21 August 2013 – Michael Schumacher says he gets great satisfaction from seeing the progress Mercedes has made this year, the German viewing the improvement as a vindication of the development work he helped to conduct during his spell onboard.
Having agreed to come out of retirement to race for the German marque in 2010, Schumacher’s return to the sport was tinged with frustration, as early expectations of an eighth title gave way to unfamiliar battles further down the grid. With a single rostrum finish representing his best result, the 44-year-old made his final appearance in Brazil last year, eventually ending up 13th in the Drivers’ Championship.
Despite failing to match his previous accomplishments, Schumacher reckons his three years with the Silver Arrows did not go to waste, and that he has helped to provide the formula for future successes.
"I am happy for the progression the team has quite clearly made," said the seven-time title winner. "It means the work we did in the past years was not bad, as indeed we managed to set the basis we wanted to find to then increase the performance.
"It is cool to see that the step the team took is probably even bigger than expected from last year to this year, and I think I have good reasons to be happy about it."
