Schumacher tips Vettel to match title haul
30 August 2013 – Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher believes that Sebastian Vettel has a realistic chance of matching his title haul in the top echelon, with the Red Bull driver vying to secure a fourth Drivers' crown in as many seasons.
Vettel, 26, has been an insurmountable force during the past three campaigns, and heads into the final eight races of the current season with a 46-point lead over Ferrari rival Fernando Alonso, whom he denied in a thrilling finale at Interlagos last year.
While backing his fellow German to triumph again this term, Schumacher is also increasingly aware that his record could be threatened in the seasons to come.
"If I have got to say one person [to win the 2013 title] at the moment – because they have the best package – it has to be Sebastian," Schumacher, who retired from the sport for a second time at the end of 2012, told Belgian television channel Vier.
"Records are there to be beaten, that's what I did! If somebody should, then I would be very happy for him to do it. He has already done three, so why can't he do seven?"
Schumacher's maiden and final world titles came ten years apart; he achieved his first with the Benetton squad in 1994, while he secured his last for Ferrari in 2004.
