Circuit de Catalunya gets name change
3 September 2013 – The Circuit de Catalunya has been given a modified name as part of a newly-signed sponsorship agreement between the local council and the Montmeló-based track.
From now on, the traditional host of the Spanish Grand Prix will be called the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with the Barcelona City Council and venue officials seeing the "need to bind the tourist attractions of the city with the activities of the racetrack."
"The city of Barcelona has a lot of strength and a great international projection," Vicenç Aguilera, President of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya Consortium, said during the announcement. "Therefore we believe that the new name, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, will help us to boost the facilities much stronger, just as we have been doing in recent years with the promotion of the Formula 1 and MotoGP Grands Prix."
As part of the changes, the circuit's logo will feature the track layout, a representation of the map of Catalonia on a chequered flag and the name of the city of Barcelona.
