Jones: Ricciardo capable of winning title
3 September 2013 – Former World Champion Alan Jones believes that Daniel Ricciardo is capable of becoming Australia's third Formula 1 title winner in coming seasons, having been chosen to partner Sebastian Vettel at the Red Bull team from 2014 onwards.
After two campaigns racing for the junior Toro Rosso squad, Ricciardo was confirmed as Mark Webber's replacement on Monday evening, the latter revealing earlier in the year that he is moving to the World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Porsche.
And Jones, who claimed his sole world title while racing for Williams in 1980, is certain the Perth-born driver has what it takes to reach the Formula 1 summit.
''He's got to grab the bull by both horns now and go for it," Jones explained to AAP. "There's been a lot of kids go into that [Red Bull junior] programme and have never survived it – and Daniel is one that has.
''As far as Red Bull's concerned, they know they've got Vettel. If it takes Daniel 12 months or thereabouts to get into the groove with that particular team, I think they've probably factored that in. I don't know about next year but I'd certainly say yes, Daniel is capable of winning a championship.''
Prior to Jones' aforementioned world title triumph, Sir Jack Brabham claimed three Drivers' crowns; he notched up his first two with Cooper during the 1959 and 1960 seasons, before succeeding for a final time with his eponymous team in 1966.
