Hamilton declares title hopes over
8 September 2013 – Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton says his 2013 championship hopes are over after a challenging Italian Grand Prix weekend yielded no more than a ninth place finish.
After a shock elimination from the second qualifying phase on Saturday, leaving him 12th on the grid, Hamilton's struggles were compounded when he picked up a slow puncture early in the race, putting him out of sync with his rivals' strategies.
Although he delivered a spirited fight back, Hamilton had to make do with just two points at the chequered flag, later describing a "disaster of a weekend" to reporters.
"I'm ninth and we should be much further ahead. I'm very disappointed with myself," Hamilton explained. "I blew it in qualifying and it was just impossible to catch up. It's so hard you've given your all for two points. That's it for the championship.
"The team did a great job and I didn't deliver this weekend. I've got to go away, reset and try to recover at the next race [in Singapore]. Overall a disaster of a weekend."
Hamilton is now 81 points behind ongoing title leader Sebastian Vettel, with a maximum total of 175 available over the course of the final seven Grands Prix.
Nico Rosberg fared better in the sister Mercedes, finishing in sixth position.
