Gutiérrez delighted with 'special' result
22 September 2013 – Esteban Gutiérrez has described as "really special" his top ten qualifying performance at the Marina Bay street circuit on Saturday evening, with the Sauber driver making it through to the final shootout phase for the first time in his short Formula 1 career.
Having shown flashes of pace throughout the weekend, the Mexican rookie delivered a strong Super Soft effort in the closing stages of Q2 to prolong his time behind the wheel, knocking out team-mate Nico Hülkenberg who lost time with a DRS issue.
"To qualify 10th is a really special feeling and one that I have missed," said Gutiérrez. "I enjoyed every part of qualifying. The result was very important, because it’s not fun going into qualifying knowing that you can be around the top ten, but not getting there."
Gutiérrez added that although he is fully aware of the various demands in Sunday's race, he is hopeful of converting his grid slot into a maiden Formula 1 points finish.
"I think it will be a tough race; tyre degradation will be critical," he said. "We usually have good race pace and also had that in FP2. I'm confident we can push for points."
Gutiérrez did not post a time in Q3, meaning he has free choice over his starting tyre.
