Alonso: Second place like a victory
22 September 2013 – Fernando Alonso says his second-place finish in the Singapore Grand Prix is "like a victory" for the Ferrari team, having struggled for raw pace throughout the weekend.
Starting from seventh on the grid, the Spaniard made the strongest getaway of the evening to emerge in third at the first corner, later improving upon the position by opting to pit under the Safety Car caused by Daniel Ricciardo's Turn 18 crash.
"We got a fantastic start," said Alonso, who has finished second for the past three races. "We didn't have the pace, so we had to invent something. With the very good start and different strategy it paid off with a fantastic result. It's like a victory for us.
"[Our strategy] was risky, but we had nothing to lose. Then we took care of the tyres and the car performed well. Finishing second or fifth doesn't matter too much."
Of Red Bull's dominance, Alonso added: "They were too fast all weekend. We have to congratulate them for a fantastic weekend, and next time we will try to do better."
In the sister Ferrari, Felipe Massa wound up in his starting position of sixth.
