FIA blocks McLaren tyre test in Austin
4 October 2013 – Governing body the FIA has blocked plans for McLaren to carry out a Pirelli tyre test in Austin, after teams claimed a performance advantage could have been gained.
The outfit was set to travel to the Circuit of The Americas to help the manufacturer with the development of its 2014 tyre range. But despite the use of a two-year-old car, rivals have objected to a test taking place before a Grand Prix takes place at the venue.
Speaking of the situation in Korea, Red Bull team boss Christian Horner explained: "I would have thought it makes more sense to be held post an event rather than pre and event. The way that Formula 1 is nowadays, to run any car – even a two-year-old car – you are going to learn something, whether it is just about track conditions.
"Whereas after the circuit has been used, it doesn't have a direct impact on that year's championship. It is far more palatable and sensible for it to happen post an event."
