Alonso: Hülkenberg driving superbly
7 October 2013 – Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has heaped praise on Sauber rival Nico Hülkenberg, following the German's impressive fourth-place finish at the Korean Grand Prix.
Having started from seventh on the grid, Hülkenberg gradually rose through the field to hold a top four position after the final Safety Car period. He then fought valiantly to fend off Lewis Hamilton and Alonso, thus equalling his career-best Formula 1 result.
"What Nico is doing is superb," Alonso explained at the end of Sunday's Grand Prix. "He is driving very, very well and deserved to be in front of us. He did a fantastic race.
"Sauber were very good this weekend and they are doing a very good job. They were in the top three in qualifying at Monza as well, so they are on a high at the moment."
Alonso added, however, that he believes Pirelli's mid-season tyre modifications have aided Sauber's cause, with certain teams still struggling to make the transition.
"When we changed back to the 2012 tyres, some teams had a penalty," said Alonso. "We can see very clearly that Force India are now fighting to take some points. Sauber were out of Q1 before and now the team has both cars in Q3. This is a benefit."
Hülkenberg's latest result puts Sauber level on points with closest rivals Toro Rosso, although the Hinwil-based outfit holds seventh spot due to a higher overall finish.
