Hülkenberg: Lotus have until end of month
9 October 2013 – Nico Hülkenberg has given Lotus until the end of the month to make a decision on whether or not they want him for 2014.
Hülkenberg is keen to join the Enstone-based outfit and replace the Ferrari-bound Kimi Räikkönen. However, after 2010, when he was dropped by Williams and left without a drive, he is acutely conscious that he doesn’t want to be left standing in the F1 2014 ‘game of musical chairs’.
“I want to have some certainty about my future – and not in November,” he told Autosport, when quizzed on the timeframe for him to make a decision.
“It needs to be at the end of the month, for sure. There is obviously a certain cut off point. I have experienced falling over the back in 2010, and I am not going to risk doing that again.”
If he does go to Lotus, it will be his fourth team in the space of five years – following spells with Williams, Force India and Sauber, and while the German admits that is not great, he is not overly concerned.
“It is not a worry,” he added ahead of this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix. “It is maybe not ideal but there is a positive side as well because you can take all the good things forward. Obviously in terms of consistency and settling in somewhere it is not the best, but movements happen for a reason and it is what it is, so there is no point questioning it for me.”
