Overview: How Vettel can claim the title
11 October 2013 – Although the chances are small, Sebastian Vettel can claim a fourth successive world title at the Japanese Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver holds a 77-point lead over Ferrari rival Fernando Alonso, and must increase that to advantage to 100 this weekend.
Four straight victories have put Vettel in the enviable position ahead of the Suzuka event. Not only has the German broken Mercedes' qualifying stranglehold, but his race pace has been dominant at times, with a two-second per lap cushion in Singapore.
Looking back 12 months, Vettel stormed to pole position in Japan before leading home Felipe Massa by more than 20 seconds. So, allied to his recent form, there is no reason why he will not be at the front again. But how can he become champion?
Vettel is champion if he:
Wins and Alonso scores no points
Wins and Alonso is tenth
Wins and Alonso is ninth
In the latest GPUpdate.net poll, 61 percent of voters held the belief that Vettel will fail to clinch honours at Suzuka, thus tipping the battle to stretch on to the Indian Grand Prix.
