Chilton 'chuffed' with Q1 showing
12 October 2013 – Marussia's Max Chilton described himself as "incredibly chuffed" after outqualifying team-mate Jules Bianchi and both Caterham drivers at Suzuka on Saturday.
The Briton, who had previously failed to outpace Bianchi in a straight qualifying shootout, set the 19th fastest time in the opening knockout phase, and will be promoted one place after the application of Adrian Sutil's five-place grid penalty.
"I'm incredibly chuffed. A lot of work's gone into this weekend," Chilton told Sky Sports after his qualifying performance. "Me and Jules didn't know the circuit so there was a lot of track learning to do. I'm really, really happy with that second run in qualifying."
"I think Caterham had the edge on us today but I managed to get a mega lap in. The guys got the car in the right position and the lap came. So I'm incredibly happy."
