Hamilton: Red Bulls out of reach
12 October 2013 – Lewis Hamilton says Red Bull were simply "out of reach" during Saturday's qualifying session at Suzuka, but is hopeful of putting up a greater challenge in race conditions.
The Mercedes driver, who heads the second row, trailed pole-sitter Mark Webber by just over three tenths, although he still holds the belief that managing tyre degradation will be key to success tomorrow, with high wear rates experienced in Friday practice.
"Third is a strong result but the Red Bulls were just out of reach," he said. "Managing tyre degradation will be key tomorrow so hopefully we can get a good start from the clean side of the grid, then see what we can do from there against the guys in front."
Despite being closer to pole position at the preceding Korea round, Hamilton feels Mercedes is in a stronger position this weekend: "It seems to me that we have a better package here than we've had for a while and the car felt awesome to drive."
Nico Rosberg finished sixth in the sister Mercedes, 0.144 seconds behind Hamilton.
