Hamilton: I can't believe my luck
13 October 2013 – Lewis Hamilton was left to rue what might have been after opening lap contact with Sebastian Vettel led to the Mercedes driver retiring from the Japanese Grand Prix.
Having stormed through from the second row, Hamilton was clipped by Vettel's Red Bull on the run to the first corner, resulting in a right-rear puncture. Despite attempting to continue, permanent damage gave the team little choice but to retire his car.
"I had a great start, one of the best all year," Hamilton told reporters. "I went for the gap, as I felt like I had a good one, but the rear tyre gave way. I can't believe my luck.
"I feel for the guys and the team. Unfortunately luck has not been on my side."
After a drive-through penalty, team-mate Nico Rosberg salvaged points in eighth.
