Alonso: Vettel title triumph inevitable
13 October 2013 – Fernando Alonso says it is "only a matter of time" until Sebastian Vettel secures this year's world title, with the German's lead up to 90 points after his victory in Japan.
Although Alonso kept his championship chances mathematically alive with a top four finish at Suzuka, the Ferrari driver is well aware of the mammoth challenge ahead of him he if is to prevent Vettel from notching up a fourth successive Drivers' crown.
"Even if Sebastian retired from all four races, I would have to win all of them. We will keep doing the best possible, but it's a matter of time [until Vettel claims the title]."
Alonso added that fourth was the best Ferrari could have achieved on Sunday afternoon, given the pace advantage of the Red Bulls and Lotus' Romain Grosjean.
"We weren't as quick as the Red Bulls or Grosjean so fourth was the maximum," he said. "We recovered some pace, but they were too strong for us even without traffic."
