Kubica to drive WRC car on Rally GB
15 October 2013 – Former F1 driver Robert Kubica will step up and drive a Citroën DS3 WRC car on Wales Rally GB next month, the final round of the 2013 FIA World Rally Championship, it has been confirmed.
Kubica has been racing in WRC2 this season in a Citroën DS3 RRC and the Pole has enjoyed much success, winning four of the six events he has contested, and he currently heads the WRC2 championship standings.
He will conclude his WRC2 season next week in Spain, where second place will be enough to give him his first world title, a remarkable achievement given his horrendous rally accident at the start of 2011.
“This one-off outing for the works team is a great opportunity for me, but it’s also a huge challenge,” said the former Renault and BMW Sauber ace. “Wales Rally GB wasn’t part of my original programme, so I’m very happy to be able to have this precious experience. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my partners for this season, who have made this possible."
Citroën team principal Yves Matton meanwhile is convinced Kubica has done enough this year to have earned the drive in Wales.
“In my discussions with Robert, we agreed that he would move up to the next category if he won the WRC2 title. It’s true that as things stand, he hasn’t won the title. But even if he doesn’t win it in Spain, he has still had a very successful season. He is therefore perfectly entitled to have a go at Wales Rally GB,” Matton stated.
“There is no doubt that his motivation and professional attitude mean he can set his sights on securing a good result.”
Kubica will use Khalid Al Qassimi’s DS3 WRC car and will run under the Abu Dhabi Citroën Total World Rally Team banner.
“Such a fantastic performance [in WRC2 this year] is worthy of our trust,” added Al Qassimi, who has offered his seat to Kubica. “Robert’s fine results this year are down to his hard work and determination. We know he will do a great job in representing the Abu Dhabi Citroën Total World Rally Team.”
