Kvyat lands 2014 Toro Rosso seat
21 October 2013 – Daniil Kvyat will graduate to Formula 1 with Toro Rosso next season, replacing Red Bull-bound Daniel Ricciardo. The Faenza-based outfit's move comes as a surprise, with António Félix da Costa previously expected to be given the chance.
Kvyat has performed well in GP3 and European Formula 3 this season, and took part in the Silverstone Young Driver Test with his future team back in July. The Russian, 19, also completed an aerodynamic test for the senior Red Bull squad in Spain last week.
He will partner Frenchman Jean-Éric Vergne, who has been retained for a third term.
"This is fantastic news, a dream come true and I want to thank Red Bull and Toro Rosso for giving me this priceless opportunity," said Kvyat. "Ever since I began karting, I wanted to get to Formula 1 and now that wish will become reality next season.
"I had a brief taste of working with the Toro Rosso team, when I drove for them at the Silverstone test and I enjoyed the experience very much. The fact I am based in Italy and speak Italian will, I am sure, help me to become part of the team very quickly."
Toro Rosso's line-up call casts doubt over Félix da Costa's future. The 22-year-old Portuguese, who endured a troublesome campaign in Formula Renault 3.5, was the favourite to land the drive, but now faces a period of uncertainty ahead of 2014.
