Berger: Daniil Kvyat is a 'natural talent'
24 October 2013 – Former F1 race winner Gerhard Berger is backing Daniil Kvyat to succeed when he graduates to the pinnacle of the sport with Toro Rosso in 2014.
The Russian was confirmed as the replacement for the Red Bull-bound Daniel Ricciardo on Monday evening.
The decision came as a surprise to many, especially fellow Red Bull junior pilot Antonio Felix da Costa, who was thought to be favourite to land the seat alongside Jean-Eric Vergne. Berger, however, is confident the 19-year-old will cope, even though he is being plucked direct from GP3.
“Kvyat is a natural talent,” Berger said in an interview with APA, the Austrian National News Agency.
“He has natural speed and he has shown his potential. He has had some strong results [this year], despite not being in the best car.
“He is not a learner, but a racer. Toro Rosso is a good school. It’s a great opportunity for him.”
Despite that though, Berger has urged people to be patient: “It will take time [for him to adapt]. You have to let him have two years.
“Then you can evaluate it.”
