Alonso: We had to try different strategy
26 October 2013 – Fernando Alonso says he had little choice but to adopt a different tyre strategy during Indian Grand Prix qualifying, given the performance advantage of his closest rivals.
The Ferrari driver, who ultimately qualified in eigth position, was one of four drivers along with Red Bull's Mark Webber (fourth) and the McLarens of Sergio Perez (ninth) and Jenson Button (10th) to use the Medium compound in the final shootout phase.
The remaining drivers, including fifth-placed team-mate Felipe Massa, opted for the Softer rubber, and Alonso reckons the durability of this tyre will be vital to success.
"I'm happy with my strategy," said Alonso. "The best decision for the team was to put one car on one strategy and one car on another. At some point in the race we need to put the Soft tyre on as well and we will struggle, so we need to be ready for that.
"But if we started on the same strategy we would not gain any places as we are not as quick as the others. No one knows what will work better. The better strategy will win."
Alonso is hopeful that he will be able to gain track position in the opening stages of the race, with those starting on the Soft tyres expected to make much earlier pit-stops.
"If the soft lasts long enough, with good conditions and good pace, the people in front will not have any problems," he said. "But the Soft tyres are not good. It's not a hope, it's the reality. If it's a disaster tomorrow then people will have more problems."
